May, 2025 Presidential Letter Be part of the future of how the scientific community understands and treats dual disorders Vancouver is waiting for you Dear Friends and Colleagues, From September 4th to 6th, 2025, in Vancouver, BC, Canada, we will host a joint congress with the Canadian Academy of Addicton Psychiatry (CAAP), which will also be the 9th World Congress of the World Associaton on Dual Disorders (WADD). Our scientfc societes remain commited to the transfer of knowledge coming from neuroscience and precision psychiatry to individuals sufering from mental disorders, including addictons, which are inherently inseparable from these conditons. With the presence of renowned internatonal speakers, we will explore BIO-PSYCHO SOCIAL approaches to mental health care. Our goal is to improve the treatment of individuals with dual disorders (addicton and other mental health conditons) through an integratve, transdiagnostc, and dimensional perspectve. We aim to present a modern perspectve of mental health and illness, aligned with the latest knowledge of 21st-century advancements. This congress ofers clinical training in dual disorders for all professionals working in mental health. We welcome psychiatrists, addicton specialists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, researchers, and other professionals interested in dual disorders to partcipate in an innovatve scientfc program alongside colleagues from around the World. During those late summer days in Vancouver, we look forward to fostering an inspiring scientfc gathering that defnes our congress. Once more WADD Members will participate in scientific activities during the congress.     AWARDS PRESENTATION National Commitees Our National Committees are having an intense activity during these months Pietrasanta Hosts First Italian-Language Meeting of WADD-Italy Scientific Committee Pietrasanta, April 11, 2025 – The historic Tuscan town of Pietrasanta, located in the province of Lucca, served as the venue for the first Italian-language meeting of the Scientific Committee of WADD-Italy, the national branch of the World Association on Dual Disorders (WADD). The event marked a significant milestone for the Italian scientific community engaged in the research and treatment of co-occurring psychiatric disorders and addictions. The WADD-Italy Scientific Committee, as presented at the meeting, is composed of one past president, one current president, a scientific director, twelve presidential advisors, and three special presidential consultants. The event was held under the patronage of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in Rome, the leading public health institution in Italy, and in collaboration with two Roman universities: Unicamillus – International Medical University, and Mercatorum University. The program featured a broad and multidisciplinary range of topics. A central point of discussion was the drafting of a national scientific consensus on the treatment of Dual Disorders, with participants reviewing and debating a preliminary version of the document. The event brought together 96 WADD members from across Italy, fostering a dynamic exchange of clinical insights and research perspectives. Participants are set to reconvene in Pietrasanta in two years, reaffirming the town’s role as a meeting point for cutting-edge dialogue on dual disorders         Argentina National Committee Meeting Dra. Abraham at the Mexican 24th WPA World Congress presenting a poster   Dr. Marcela Waisman, Estela Abraham, and Gabriela Martínez at APAL listening to Dr. Szerman's presentation in Argentina           Virtual Meeting of the Argentinian Committee coordinated by the secretary: Dr. Bruno Francisco and the president: Dr. Waisman Marcela   SACO Congress in Argentina (on obesity) presenting Dr. Waisman on dual pathology and obesity           Portuguese National Committee   The Portuguese Committee of the World Association of Dual Disorders (WADD) and the Associação Portuguesa de Patologia Dual (APPD), returned to activity and are organizing the IX National Congress and II Cross-border Congress of Dual and Addictive Disorders, with the theme Addiction and Mental Illness: consensus and contradictions, on October 17th and 18th 2025, in Portalegre, Portugal. We are also organizing a Discussion Forum on the theme Opioids in the Treatment of Alcohol Dependence, on July 14th in Coimbra, with scientific sponsor by INTAUD and with the participation of Dr. Albrecht Ulmer, from Germany. We welcome the participation of 16 new members in the Portuguese Committee of WADD, including young doctors and psychiatrists, ensuring the future of Portuguese participation in this movement. Célia Franco Coordinator of Portuguese Commitee of WADD Austrian  National Committee   Currently we are building up our network in Austria. Therefore we are in contact with colleagues of other hospitals specialized in addiction medicine and get good response to our initiative. We hope that we can present new members for our National Committee in the next few months.   Together with our colleagues we plan a prevalence study on Dual Disorders in hospitals specialized in addiction medicine across Austria. Beside that we are busy planing our first German-speaking Meeting of the WADD (February 2026) and can proudly say, that we are making big steps forward in the whole organization process. Jan Rosenleitner and Isabella Fuchs-Leitner Co-Chairs of the National Committee Austria Colombian National Committee Meeting The internal meeting of the Colombia WADD National Committee took place on April 10th, 2025. Chaired by Luz Angela Rojas Bernal and Erik García Muñoz, the main goal was the formation of a new National Committee for WADD Colombia. The meeting concluded by encouraging active involvement in the committee and the development of initiatives to advance the training and intervention related to dual disorders.        New Chair of the Swiss National Committee   Dr. Sophia Achab becomes the new Chair of the Swiss WADD Committee.   Dr. Achab is an Associate Psychiatrist in the Addictions Service of the Department of the Geneva University Hospitals, Privat Dozent at the University of Geneva, and head of the WHO Collaborating Center for Mental Health.
