    Antonio Verdejo-García

    Antonio currently holds the position of Professor (Research) in the School of Psychological Sciences and the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health at Monash University. He is also an NHMRC Leadership Fellow, and the Co-Chair of the Neuroscience Interest Group at the International Society of Addiction Medicine. He has an Adjunct Honorary Appointment in Turning Point (Eastern Health).

    Antonio has a PhD in Psychology (University of Granada, 2006), and a Masters in Psychological and Biomedical Aspects of Health and Illness (University of Granada, 2002). He subsequently took on postdoctoral training in addiction neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, US), the University of Cambridge (Cambridge, UK) and the Institut Hospital del Mar d’Investigacions Mediques (Barcelona, Spain). He was then appointed as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor at the University of Granada before joining Monash in 2012. 

    Antonio’s research focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms underpinning executive control and decision-making, and their implications for substance and behavioural addictions, compulsive eating and obesity. He has published > 290 peer-reviewed articles, edited a book on Cognition & Addiction (Academic Press, 2020), and his research has been continuously funded via national and international competitive research schemes. His work has attracted over 17,000 citations. He sits on the Editorial Board of the journals: Addiction (#1 in the Substance Abuse category of the Journal Citation Reports rank), PLoS One, The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Current Addiction Reports, and Adicciones.
